Critical thinking

"Critical thinking consists of a mental process of analyzing or evaluating information, particularly statements or propositions that people have offered as true. It forms a process of reflecting upon the meaning of statements, examining the offered evidence and reasoning, and forming judgments about the facts."

Futures thinking

Thinking about the future using a range of techniques, for example, thinking about possible, probable, and preferable futures. Futures thinking stimulates consideration of historical facts, current behaviour, and the trends that connect the past with the present and the future. Futures thinking stimulates innovation and is a powerful planning tool.

Permaculture

Sustainable development

Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Strong sustainability

Strong sustainability refers to the need for human activity to reflect the asymmetric interdependence of the economic, social, and environmental spheres of life. The health of the worldwide economy is totally reliant on the existence of a healthy society, which is totally reliant on the existence of a healthy environment. The reverse is not true, and yet the economy is usually the focus of policy, whereas it is in reality inextricably dependent upon the vitality of the social, and environmental spheres.

Subsidiarity

Subsidiarity is the principle which states that matters ought to be handled by the smallest (or lowest) competent authority. The Oxford English Dictionary defines subsidiarity as the idea that a central authority should have a subsidiary function, performing only those tasks which cannot be performed effectively at a more immediate or local level.

Systems thinking

"Systems thinking is a mental model that promotes the belief that the component parts of a system will act differently when isolated from its environment or other parts of the system..."

Weak sustainability

Weak sustainability refers to the balancing of economic activity with social and environmental responsibility. The term appears to have been coined by those who first refuted the symmetrical "triple bottom line" model for corporate social responsibility for not reflecting the asymmetric interdependence of the economic, social, and environmental spheres of life.
