Problems addressed
New Zealand and South Pacific climate has demonstrated change, often
dramatic, as a constant feature. In the mid-20th century climate
scientists feared we were on course for a slow descent in temperature
to the next Ice Age. Then the enhanced greenhouse effect came on the
scene and with it predictions of a warmer world during the 21st
century. In the 1980s the effects of El Nino and La Nina were felt,
and the last decade of the 20th century brought with it Mt Pinatubo
and the dramatic effects of volcanic eruptions on the climate. And
in the last few years the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation has left its calling card. The evolution of all these features and their impact on our climate will be discussed, along with the implications of global warming trends during the 21st century.
Solutions provided
The National Climate Centre provides regular public information on current climate conditions across New Zealand including soil moisture and river
flows, and outlooks for coming seasons. Scientists at the Centre keep track of global influences on New Zealand's climate. Our goal is to help New Zealanders manage for climate variations, including droughts.
Biography
I am a Principal Scientist in Climate with NIWA's National Climate
Centre (NCC). I have been researching New Zealand and South Pacific
climates for 30 years, and am a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on climate Change.
