Biography
Gerry Te Kapa Coates is a professional engineer and consultant who has always taken a keen interest in how technology interacts with society. As President of the Institution of Professional Engineers in 2003 he led a task force on sustainability. Earlier in 1983 he started Engineers for Social Responsibility, which is still very active. His professional interests range widely from sustainability through renewable energy to transport. He was on the board of Land Transport New Zealand till 2007, and chair of the New Zealand Wind Energy Association till 2008. He is Ngâi Tahu, and on its governing body Te Rűnanga o Ngâi Tahu and the board of Ngâi Tahu Holdings Corporation. He was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to engineering in 2007.
