Biography
I started my career as a horticultural research scientist with the DSIR (now HortResearch ltd). After 11 years in this role I moved to the food industry where I became involved in quality assurance, risk management and sustainable business practices. In the mid 1990's I joined Unitec as a lecturer in ecology and plant biology; I subsequently spent 8 years as Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences. During this time I facilitated the development of Unitec's Environmental policy, based on the principles of Agenda 21, and assisted in the development of a systems based undergraduate degree in resource management. In 2004 I returned to teaching and research, with a strong focus on ecology and sustainable development. I have had involvement with SANZ since its inception, and also with NZ Society for Sustainability Engineering and Science, NZ Institute of Agriculture and Horticultal Science and AnewNZ. I am now working in the horticultural sector as Innovation Leader with Zespri,my role involves supporting Zespri sustainability strategy and research to provide sustainable production and marketing systems, including waste reduction, energy efficiency,reduction in use of chemicals, increased biodiversity and social repsonsibility
