SANZ vision
The people of Aotearoa New Zealand practise, live and demonstrate sustainability in all that they do.
SANZ will achieve its vision by:
- Promoting the realisation of the vision in a way that motivates, empowers and inspires;
- Fostering the emergence of Aotearoa New Zealand as a society that exercises guardianship of the community of life (kaitiakitanga) with respect to ecosystems, natural resources, healthy communities, free and responsible citizens;
- Promoting whole systems thinking and design;
- Engaging members and all sectors of society to contribute to the vision of a sustainable Aotearoa New Zealand through consensus building;
- Linking members to create a powerful and empowering voice for sustainability in Aotearoa New Zealand;
- Identifying and promoting appropriate sustainability principles, objectives, strategies, actions and indicators to support progress to greater levels of sustainability;
- Promoting ethical and scientific rigour in sustainable practice through research, development, education and information sharing;
- Learning from and valuing diverse knowledge systems and ways of understanding.
SANZ background
Over recent years, under the initial umbrella of the Royal Society of New Zealand, a diverse group of individuals and organisations have met in order to progress sustainable development in New Zealand.
This group met under the name 'Sustainable Development Forum'. At the same time, a separate group under the name of 'Sustainable New Zealand' was meeting in Rotorua and Auckland with very similar objectives.
In good Kiwi fashion, the two groups merged and in 2005 SANZ was incorporated as a charitable trust. It is run by an elected board who have secured funding for the organization, created and launched this website, and made a commitment to facilitate the realization of a New Zealand Sustainable Development Blueprint, as called for by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the 'Earth Summit') in 1992 and committed to by the New Zealand Government Cabinet in July 2001.

SANZ Purpose
The purpose of SANZ and this website is to assist New Zealanders as we all learn how to live wisely and sustainably in the 21st Century. SANZ will fulfill its purpose through leadership, advocacy, networking, education, and support.
SANZ's first and most important role is to communicate and educate, and our first task is to ensure that every New Zealander understands the true nature of the challenges we face, that they are a result of all human activity, and that they will require a united response of changed mindset and changed behaviour.
Our second task is to ensure that all sectors of New Zealand society are aware of the practical ways that SANZ and its members and member organizations can assist them to achieve the necessary changes.
